Look up German embassies and consulates general through the visa section in your account.

First, check whether you need a visa

Your citizenship, existing residence status and planned stay determine which entry and residence procedure applies.

Your situationWhat to check
EU/EEA or Swiss nationalA German student entry visa is generally not required. Check the registration formalities relevant to your stay.
National of a country with a long-stay visa exemptionYou may be able to enter without a study visa and apply for the relevant residence permit after arrival. Check the conditions before travelling.
Other non-EU nationalityA national visa is generally required before travelling for a study stay. Check the requirements of your responsible German mission.
Conditional admission or a preparatory courseCheck which study or preparatory route matches your actual admission conditions.
Student residence status in another EU countryCheck whether a recognised mobility procedure applies or whether a separate German procedure is needed.

A visa exemption for a short visit does not automatically mean you can enter for a long study stay under the same rules.

Find the mission responsible for your application

Start with where you normally live and check the mission’s consular district. Your citizenship alone does not necessarily determine where you apply.

In your Germany for Students account, you can browse the country directory and look up the listed embassies and consulates general.

The responsible mission’s instructions explain how to submit your application, including any online portal or authorised service provider involved.

Prepare the documents for your case

Use the current checklist for your responsible mission. This overview helps you identify the main areas to prepare.

Document or informationWhat to check
PassportValidity, identity details and the copies required for your application.
University admission letterProgramme, study start and any conditions attached to your offer.
Proof of fundingAccepted form, required amount and the period it must cover.
Health insuranceSuitable coverage for your entry and intended stay, with the required confirmations.
Academic and language documentsCertificates, translations and any additional verification required for your case.
APS certificate, where applicableWhether your qualifications and application route require one.
Application forms, photographs and feesThe format and submission requirements for the procedure you will use.
Other supporting documentsAnything additionally required by your responsible mission.

Keep the relevant documents ready and check whether originals, certified copies or translations are needed. An APS certificate, VPD or confirmation of a university application does not replace an admission letter where one is required.

Arrange your financial proof

A blocked account is one way to demonstrate that you can support yourself. Depending on your case, other accepted evidence may include a qualifying scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment.

Check the current amount and accepted documents for your purpose of stay. If you use a blocked account, allow time for the transfer and the required confirmation.

Plan your insurance dates

For your full visa preparation, documents and study checklist, create your account with your admission letter.

Your arrival date and the start of your ongoing health insurance may be different. Check the cover required for the period between them.

Insurance for the visa and for your studies

Insurance for entry and the initial period

Temporary incoming insurance may be needed before ongoing cover begins. Its policy terms must fit your intended stay and the requirements of your visa procedure.

The required duration is not the same for every application.

Ongoing health insurance for your studies

Arrange suitable cover for your studies and confirm when it becomes active. Your university’s insurance status notification is a separate part of enrolment.

From preparation to arrival

  1. 1.Confirm your route and responsible mission

Check the correct category, consular district and current instructions before beginning the application.

  2. 2.Prepare the supporting documents

Coordinate your admission documents, financial proof, insurance and any additional requirements. Check that your names and intended dates are consistent.

  3. 3.Complete the official submission procedure

Follow the mission’s process. Where online submission is available, an in-person step may still be needed for identity checks, biometrics, originals or payment.

  4. 4.Respond to requests and plan around the decision

Monitor the official communication channel and provide any additional documents requested. Processing times vary, so consider booking conditions when making travel arrangements.

  5. 5.Check your visa and arrival responsibilities

If a visa is issued, check its validity and conditions. After arrival, organise any required address registration and residence permit procedure in time.

Questions about German student visas

Does Germany for Students submit my visa application?

Your account helps you find the relevant mission and organise your preparations. Submit your application through the official procedure specified by the mission.

Do I apply in my country of citizenship?

Not necessarily. The responsible mission is generally determined by your normal place of residence and its consular district. Check the mission’s jurisdiction and residence requirements.

Does every student need a blocked account?

No. A blocked account is one form of financial proof. Check which evidence is accepted for your situation before choosing an option.

Do all visa applications require 183 days of incoming insurance?

No single duration applies to every case. Check the insurance requirements of your procedure, your intended arrival and the confirmed start of your ongoing coverage.

Can I apply for a visa without a university admission letter?

Other routes, including seeking a place in higher education, may be available if their requirements are met. They have their own conditions. Access to the Germany for Students account and full guide described on this page requires a university admission letter.

The responsible authorities decide on appointments and visa applications. A Germany for Students account helps you organise your preparations.
