Your admission is the beginning. Here is what comes next.

Accepting your study place, preparing your visa, arranging insurance and finding somewhere to live can overlap. This overview helps you see the main steps. Your Germany for Students account gives you the detailed instructions and a checklist you can return to as your plans progress.

Follow the steps relevant to your situation. Your citizenship, admission conditions and existing arrangements determine what you need.

Plan & documents

Check your admission and important dates

Read your university admission letter carefully. Check your programme, study location, start date, acceptance deadline and enrolment requirements. If your offer is conditional, identify what you still need to complete.

In your Germany for Students account: keep your study documents together and use the full guide to work through your preparations.

Check your visa route early

Whether you need a visa before travelling depends on your citizenship and planned stay. Identify the responsible German mission and check its application procedure early enough to plan around your study dates.

In your Germany for Students account: access the visa section to look up the relevant visa office and continue your preparation.

Visa & enrolment

Plan your budget and secure your funding

Work out your expected living costs, university charges and first expenses after arrival. Check which financial proof is accepted for your situation.

A blocked account is one possible way to demonstrate your funding. If you need one, allow time for the application, transfer and blocking confirmation. Opening the account alone does not complete the financial proof.

Start looking for accommodation

Begin your search as soon as your study city is clear. Look at student dorms, application requirements and waiting lists while you prepare your visa and insurance.

In your Germany for Students account: search student dorms in your study city and check how to apply with the operator.

Dorm listings help you research accommodation. They do not show guaranteed vacancies, and applications are made with the operator.

Arrange insurance for your visa and arrival

Check whether you need temporary incoming insurance before your ongoing health insurance starts. Choose coverage that fits your arrival plans, intended stay and visa procedure.

Incoming insurance and ongoing student health insurance serve different purposes. Check the required coverage and duration for your case.

In your Germany for Students account: access incoming insurance options alongside your other study preparations.

Organise health insurance and your university notification

Arrange suitable health insurance for your studies and complete your university’s insurance status procedure. Where required, a German statutory insurer sends the electronic notification known as M10 directly to your university.

You can apply for DAK-Gesundheit through Germany for Students. DAK checks your eligibility and documents and arranges the university notification as applicable.

Have your university admission letter and passport copy ready.

Complete your visa application, if required

Use the current requirements of your responsible German mission to prepare your documents and complete the submission process. Keep track of appointments, requests for additional documents and application updates.

In your Germany for Students account: use the visa information and your study checklist to organise this stage.

Complete your university enrolment

Your admission letter offers you a study place. Enrolment confirms your status as a student.

Follow your university’s instructions for documents, payments, admission conditions and health insurance notification. Check the deadline and which steps you can complete before arriving.

Before you travel

Prepare your journey and first days

Check your travel and entry documents, insurance start dates and accommodation for arrival. Keep important documents accessible and budget for initial expenses such as temporary accommodation, a deposit and everyday purchases.

In your Germany for Students account: work through the travel preparation guidance and keep the relevant documents together.

After arrival

Organise your address, banking and insurance details

Once you have moved in, organise the address registration relevant to your situation, everyday banking and your blocked account’s payout process, if applicable. Give your insurer and other relevant organisations your German contact details.

In your Germany for Students account: follow the arrival steps and return to your product applications when needed.

Arrange your residence permit, if required

Check whether you need a residence permit after entering Germany and follow the procedure of your local foreigners authority. Start in time and keep proof of any application you submit.

In your Germany for Students account: find the next steps for organising your stay after arrival.

Set up your university life

Activate your university accounts, check your timetable and attend orientation. Keep track of semester contributions, re-enrolment dates and any conditions attached to your study place.

In your Germany for Students account: continue your checklist and explore resources for life in Germany.

When your study setup is in place, explore student jobs, working-student roles or internships. Check the work conditions that apply to your residence status before accepting a role.
